Cabrini among the top maternity hospitals

Date: 13/05/2013

Cabrini is ranked the second top maternity service nationally, according to the results of Medibank Private’s annual national survey into maternity hospital experiences announced to coincide with Mother’s Day. More than 1500 patients across Australia completed the survey.

Cabrini increased its score to 92 points out of 100 points, an increase on its previous score of 90.2 and 14 points higher than the average rating of 78 points.

New parents, who recently gave birth in private hospitals across Australia, rated hospital performance, environment, staff and support throughout the pregnancy, birth and early parenthood. Topics ranged from pre-admission care such as antenatal classes and hospital familiarisation, to breastfeeding support and advice on caring for newborns.

Nationally Cabrini rated second behind The Bays Hospital which delivered 480 babies in 2011-12. Sunshine Coast Private Hospital, in third place, delivered approximately 420 babies the same year.

Cabrini delivered 1771 babies in 2011-12 and is on track to deliver 2000 babies in 2012-13.

“In 2011-12, Cabrini delivered 343 more babies than the previous year with increased capacity in our maternity service to meet community need,” said Chief Executive Dr Michael Walsh.

Growth in Cabrini’s maternity service:

Year Number
2007-08 1411
2008-09 1400
2009-10 1379
2010-11 1428
2011-12 1711

For almost 60 years, Cabrini has provided maternity care for communities in Victoria. Dr Walsh says the accolade recognises Cabrini doctors and staff, past and present.

“The team at Cabrini, which includes experienced obstetricians, midwives, lactation consultants, nurses and physiotherapists, provides a safe, high quality, comprehensive maternity service supported by onsite emergency, intensive care and advanced diagnostic services,” he said.

Dr Michael Walsh, who is a parent himself, says the arrival of a new baby is the highpoint in the life of a family and that it is a privilege to provide this service.

“With the arrival of five healthy new baby girls at Cabrini Malvern on Mother’s Day (12 May 2013), it was an exciting day for our new mothers, their families, our midwives, doctors and nursing staff,” he said.

“We are proud of our hardworking staff and the important role they play in the lives of our patients and families.

“We strive to provide new parents and their families with 100 per cent right care, 100 per cent patient satisfaction and 100 per cent staff engagement.”

The Medibank Maternity Experience Index was prepared as part of the health insurer’s annual member experience survey, the largest and most comprehensive study of private patient experiences in Australia.

This is the second time that it has released details specific to maternity services. In 2011, Cabrini topped the Victorian list and in 2013, Cabrini held its ranking as the second top maternity service in Australia.

According to Medibank Group Executive of Provider Networks and Integrated Care, Dr Andrew Wilson, the survey has good news for maternity care in general, with an average improvement across all hospitals on the previous survey: “Sixty-four per cent of hospitals received a higher score than last year which is great for patients.”

“Cabrini has participated in the survey for the past four years and we congratulate them on their performance,” said Dr Wilson.

“While Cabrini has always rated very highly, their continued effort to improve is a reflection of excellence and benefits not only Medibank members but all patients.”
