Privacy (noun): the right of individuals to keep their information from being disclosed.
Cabrini is marking Privacy Awareness Week (28 April to 4 May 2013), with an annual campaign to promote greater privacy awareness and the importance of protecting personal information with a promotion aimed at staff, patients and their families.
Essentially, patients are in control of who can access details about them – for example, medical records, conversations and financial information.
Cabrini is committed to ensuring we all comply with relevant privacy, confidentiality and security legislation.
“Cabrini receives large amounts of information and we have an obligation not to use that information for any purpose other than for which it was given,” said Cameron Barnes, Director, Health Information Services.
About Privacy Awareness Week
The theme for this year's Privacy Awareness Week is 'Privacy and Data Security: Information Reform', following on from Victoria’s Attorney General’s announcement on 20 December 2012 about reforms designed to strengthen data security and privacy.
Speaking in Melbourne at the inaugural Privacy Victoria Oration held on 1 September 2009, the Hon Michael Kirby AC CMG said: “I do not pretend that it is easy to safeguard privacy in the current age. But surrendering the endeavour as just too difficult is not an option.”
He said that citizens know that privacy is an attribute of our fundamental human rights and freedoms.
“It is an assertion that, within limits that are set by law, individuals have an entitlement to protect their personal being, their immediate family and relationships, their individual space and their information,” said Mr Kirby.
