About the service

Our special care baby unit cares for sick or premature babies and can accommodate up to 10 babies.

Would my baby need to go to the Special Care Baby Unit?

Babies born less at than 36 weeks gestation and babies of diabetic mothers requiring insulin are more likely to be admitted to the nursery.

In rare cases, some babies are a bit stunned at birth and make the transition to life outside the uterus more slowly. This is primarily because they are slower to clear the fluid out of their lungs and they may require observation or support for a few hours or even a few days. Some babies develop jaundice in the days following birth which may require treatment in the nursery within a special crib.

If your baby requires antibiotics for any reason or if he or she needs assistance with feeding due to a poor suck and swallow reflex at birth they will be cared for in our nursery. Our Lactation consultant and Speech Pathology may visit to support you and your baby
