In addition to the well-appointed facilities and highly skilled midwives, the service is fully supported – should you need it ‒ by our in-house anaesthetic department, 24-hour operating theatres and intensive care unit ensuring you receive only the best of care.

Once your baby is born, our specially trained midwifery and nursing staff will care for your baby alongside your paediatrician. Our nursery can care for most infants born after 32 weeks gestation. Should your baby require higher levels of care, we will arrange for your baby to be transferred to a neonatal intensive care unit.

Rooming in

Rooming in allows mothers and babies to remain together. This helps you to build confidence in caring for your baby, with the support of our midwives. Rooming in helps to establish successful breast feeding and promotes bonding between new babies and their parents.

Visiting hours

There are no set visiting hours on our maternity unit. We ask that you talk to your family and friends to determine the best time for you to receive visitors. Please remember how tired you will be while you are in hospital, and that the arrival of your new baby can be an overwhelming experience.

It is a good idea to have one person responsible for controlling when people come to see you and your baby. We ask that you limit the number of visitors at any one time to two or three people. If any of your visitors is unwell, please ask them to delay their visit.

Please also be aware of other new families within the unit who may be trying to rest.

Return home sooner

We all know there’s no place like home and our Return Home Sooner package is designed for mothers who want to be home as soon as possible after the birth of their baby. Should you choose to return home sooner, you are eligible to receive a range of support services. This option will depend on your condition and that of your baby following a consultation with your doctor.

A luxury partnership with the Como Hotel

After your baby is born, you may be able to complete your recovery in a luxurious suite at The Como Hotel in South Yarra … and your family is welcome too. Leaving the clinical environment of Cabrini Malvern doesn’t mean you will leave our care. If you meet the criteria, and your doctor approves, you may opt to move to The Como and enhance your transition to home.
