Why is this important?

Patients could need a blood transfusion during their hospital stay for a number of different reasons including loss of blood during surgery or low haemoglobin levels due to disease or illness. Significant adverse blood transfusion events could include:

Incorrect blood or blood product transfused

  • Transmission of an infection
  • An immune reaction following a transfusion
  • Lung injury related to transfusion
  • Other non-immune type reactions (e.g. circulatory overload)
