Why is this important?

Patients may be unexpectedly admitted to the Intensive Care Unit after a surgical procedure if a complication arises. Complications could be the result of a procedure, or could relate to a condition or illness which was not identified before the procedure started.

In the most recent period, for every 1,248 patients who underwent an anaesthetic, one patient was unexpectedly admitted to the ICU.
