Cabrini Gandel Wing Overview

The Cabrini Gandel Wing is a $120m investment in the health and wellbeing of current and future patients, with the aim of improving our facilities in order to meet the growing needs of our community. We believe this new wing will help us deliver even better patient care.

Planning for the Gandel Wing started in 2010, as part of Cabrini’s broader clinical services plan to continuously improve our facilities and to provide an exceptional patient experience. Our facilities at Cabrini Malvern needed improvement  to meet the growing healthcare needs of our patients and their families, and to provide the best possible working environment for our staff. The Gandel Wing is integral part of our long-term vision for Cabrini to be an even better health service to care for our community in the specialty areas of maternity, acute geriatric care, cancer, emergency care, infectious diseases, neurology and stroke.

It’s important for us to offer a more integrated care, where patients increasingly need a multidisciplinary team approach with specialists in the areas of diagnosis, surgery, medicine, nursing and allied healthcare professions, such as physiotherapy. We want to provide a more holistic approach to a patient’s health, wellbeing and their experience with us – from the emotional and spiritual dimensions of healthcare and healing through to how our care is organised and provided.

Awards and nominations

The Gandel Wing officially opened on 4 June 2019, 16 weeks ahead of schedule. It took 250 tonnes of steel, 4500 cub metres of concrete and 470 thousand man hours to build.

Since then the Cabrini Gandel Wing has been nominated, and won, a number of prestigious design awards for combining state-of-the-art treatment and the latest technology, with a focus on creating spaces to encourage healing.

Even better patient care

Thank you to our generous donors

We would like to thank every patient, family member and friend who has donated to the Gandel Wing to take us into the next chapter of our Cabrini story. There are many other donors who helped bring this building to fruition, and whose names can be seen throughout the Gandel Wing. Your generosity makes a genuine difference.

We would like to say a special thank John AC and Pauline AC Gandel for their generosity in providing a significant donation to the building and after whom the Gandel Wing is named. We also thank Alan, Ada and Eva Selwyn for their donation towards the building and their continued support. The Cabrini emergency department, a major window to our community, is named in honour of the family.

What's in the Cabrini Gandel Wing?

An expanded emergency department

To continue to fulfil our role in providing rapid and high-quality emergency care, we expanded our emergency department (ED). The ground floor of the Gandel Wing now includes 19 new ED beds with ten acute treatment bays and nine private rooms.

The additional space allowed the integration of a dedicated radiology suite – equipped with general x-ray, ultrasound, and a CT scanner – enabling faster diagnosis to allow our ED doctors to promptly determine the best treatment plan for patients.

The acute cardiac service is a 20-bed unit, comprising 18 private rooms and one double room.

Even better cancer care

The new Day Oncology and Infusion Services unit includes 28 day-treatment chairs, one procedure room, four treatment and recovery bays and two isolation rooms. Cabrini is committed to tailoring care to each patient’s needs and remains at the forefront of research and development, with access to the latest treatment and clinical trials.

The purpose-built GenesisCare Radiation Oncology Centre is equipped with linear accelerators to deliver radiation therapy and a mapping CT (computed tomography) capability for medical imaging. The consolidation of chemotherapy, diagnostic and radiotherapy services into one location means patients can have all of their cancer treatment in one familiar place. This provides greater convenience and comfort for a better patient experience.

A new acute aged care unit

The purpose-built ward for the care of our older patients enables staff and doctors to better meet the needs of this complex group of patients, with a focus on care that is comprehensive and well-coordinated.

The design of rooms and common areas within this unit are focused on safety and patient care, with the goal of reducing the risk of patients having falls and experiencing delirium.

A dedicated respiratory service

Cabrini’s new respiratory and medical specialties ward provides specialised facilities to help us manage care of patients who have respiratory and infectious illnesses.

This new ward includes 18 private rooms and one double room.
