Every year, more than half a million consultations are conducted at an emergency department within a private hospital. Mindful of the public’s abhorrence of long waiting times, the Cabrini website at www.cabrini.com.au now publishes expected Emergency Department waiting times, and the number of patients yet to be seen by a doctor. This information gives both patients and referring doctors an indication of how long a person will need to wait which, in 2017, was 37 minutes on average.
This focus on efficiencies to improve the patient experience, will play a major role as the department expands as part of the new Gandel Wing due for completion in mid-2019. Now known as the Alan, Ada and Eva Selwyn Emergency Department the expansion will include more cubicles, a short stay area and radiology facilities to improve the speed and comfort of x-rays, ultrasounds and CT scans. It will be equipped to handle the increasing number of patients over the years to come.
