GenesisCare Cabrini is a radiation therapy service providing patients with a comprehensive cancer service onsite at Cabrini Malvern. Our new treatment centre and consulting suites are located on level B4 of the Gandel Wing.
Radiation therapy for cancer
Radiation therapy, also called Radiotherapy kills cancer cells. It’s used in the early stages of cancer treatment or after it has started to spread. It can also be used to try to relieve pain and discomfort from cancer that has spread. Around half of all cancer patients receive radiation therapy.
Destroying cancer cells
There are many ways to have radiation therapy, but they all work in a similar way. Carefully controlled high-energy X-rays destroy or damage cancer cells. This stops them growing or spreading.
Radiation therapy is usually delivered in daily intervals called ‘Fractions’. This allows time between treatments for the healthy cells to repair and the cancer cells to die off.
Advanced radiation therapy services
At GenesisCare, we’re always pushing the boundaries of technology to develop better radiation therapy treatments. We are better targeting the cancer cells in tumours and reducing the side effects to surrounding tissue.

While radiation therapy can be used on its own to manage cancer it is often more effective when it’s combined with other treatments. This is because different treatments target cancer via different pathways. For example:
When radiation therapy is combined with chemotherapy, cancer cells can become more sensitive to radiotherapy. This makes the radiation treatment more effective in killing cancer cells and may improve the outcome. Combining with chemotherapy treatment also treats the whole body – whereas radiation therapy only focuses on the cancer area. By treating the whole body, the combined therapy is helping to get rid of any disease that may be present in other parts of the body.
Deciding the type of approach to your treatment will depend on your specific condition and overall health – and you will decide on this in conjunction with your medical team.
Your Radiation Oncologist will recommend the treatment that’s best suited to treat your condition.
Side effects do exist, and they vary from person to person. The most common side effect is tiredness. Other side effects depend on the part of your body being treated.
Your Radiation Oncologist and Radiation Oncology Nurse will explain the side effects specific to your treatment area. They will also give you advice on how to manage these and look after yourself during and after treatment.
Delivery of Radiation therapy is generally painless. In fact, you don’t see or feel the actual treatment.
Most people continue with their usual or most of their usual daily routine during the treatment course.
Our aim is to make treatment affordable for all patients.
