GenesisCare Radiation Oncology Centre Cabrini
Radiation therapy uses radiation to eradicate or damage cancerous (abnormal) cells and stop them from growing and multiplying.
It is one of the best-established, most effective and well tolerated therapies for treating almost all cancers, extending lives, and reducing suffering.
The accumulating evidence from clinical trials shows that radiation therapy offers clear benefits to patients with a wide variety of malignant conditions in terms of cancer cure, organ preservation, effective palliation of symptoms and overall quality of life.
For most radiation treatments, you do not need to stay in hospital.
Radiation therapy is one of the best-established, most effective and well tolerated therapies for treating almost all cancers, extending lives and reducing suffering.
Dr Karen Taylor

Karen initially trained as a Physician in the UK, obtaining Membership of the Royal College of Physicians in 1992 and Fellowship in 2005. After completing a Masters in Oncology in Edinburgh in 1995, she was awarded her Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists in 1996. Karen came to Australia in 1997 and completed her Fellowship of the RANZCR in 1999. She was a Specialist Radiation Oncologist at the William Buckland Radiotherapy Centre, Alfred Health from 1999 until 2017.
Karen's special interests include optimising dose and delivery of breast radiotherapy and breast reconstruction. She has introduced electronic compensation, intensity modulated radiotherapy and deep inspiration breath hold techniques. She is a member of TROG, ASBD, ANZBCTG, ESTRO, IBCSG and contributes to clinical trials in Australia and internationally. She is also an Adjunct Senior Lecturer at Monash University. Learn more
Dr Ian Porter
Dr Ian Porter is the Inaugural Director of Radiation Oncology at Cabrini Health and is a Radiation Oncologist with GenesisCare based at Cabrini Health Malvern providing consultation services at Cabrini Malvern, Cabrini Brighton and Cabrini Prahran.
He completed his medical studies at The University of Queensland and subsequently his Fellowship with the RANZCR as a Specialist Radiation Oncologist at the Queensland Radium Institute and at The William Buckland Radiotherapy Centre at Alfred Health in Melbourne. His special interests include breast cancer, gastrointestinal cancer, intensity modulated radiation therapy and stereotactic radiotherapy. Ian was the first Radiation Oncologist to use Brainlab/Novalis gated Stereotactic Radiotherapy (SBRT) for liver tumours in Australasia. He is a member of ASTRO, ESTRO and a trials contributor to the Australasian TROG research group and is an NHMRC Associate Investigator. He is an Adjunct Senior Lecturer at Monash University. Dr Mario Guerrieri
Mario has been part of Radiation Oncology Victoria (ROV) since 2004 and GenesisCare since it amalgamated (with ROV) in 2011. He previously worked as a staff specialist at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and The Alfred.
He has developed subspecialist interests mainly in the area of pelvic malignancies (prostate cancer and rectal cancer), breast cancer and thoracic malignancies. He works closely with surgeons and oncologists in these cancer streams to deliver personalised, state of the art care in these common but complex malignancies. He is closely aligned with and attends the multidisciplinary meetings at Western Health, the Royal Melbourne Hospital/VCCC and the Epworth Freemasons Hospital.
He has been instrumental in setting up brachytherapy services in the Western Suburbs of Melbourne for the treatment of prostate cancer in 2008. In the search to continue to drive success rates and reduce toxicity for prostate cancer treatment, he has implemented intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), subsequently volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) and then image guided radiotherapy (IGRT) using implanted fiducial markers and spaceOAR. This has only been possible with close collaboration with local urologists.
Working closely with his breast surgical colleagues, he has also helped introduce a radiotherapy protocol to optimise breast cancer local control rates and improve cosmetic and patient reported outcomes in those women requiring a mastectomy and reconstruction. Mario has also been active in the delivery of stereotactic radiotherapy at our Footscray centre for the treatment of early lung cancers, as well as for the treatment of intracranial and bony metastases with minimal toxicity.
Mario consults in Footscray, Epping, East Melbourne and Richmond, and provides inpatient care at Western Private Hospital and Epworth Freemasons Hospital.
Dr David Blakey
David graduated from Melbourne University in 1987, and completed his training in radiation oncology at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in 1995. He was a consultant radiation oncologist at Peter MacCallum thereafter, and Director of Peter MacCallum's satellite centre at Monash Moorabbin, before joining GenesisCare in 2006. David currently consults at GenesisCare Radiation Oncology Centre Frankston and at Peninsula Health, and will be consulting at Cabrini 2 days per week from September 2017.
David's areas of special interest are prostate, lung, skin and lymphoma, but he has a general interest and experience in treating all common malignancies requiring radiation therapy. David has overseen the introduction of a number of technological advances in radiotherapy delivery at Frankston, including intensity modulated and image guided radiotherapy for prostate and other cancers, deep inspiration breath hold radiation therapy for breast cancer, and stereotactic brain and body radiotherapy.
