About Next Era
Designed to meet the needs of an additional 70,000 patients each year, Cabrini Next Era is not only a commitment to our community but a redevelopment project that includes major renovations to the existing Cabrini Malvern site, as well as the construction of a new east building on Coonil Crescent.
As part of a 15-year Master Plan to future-proof private healthcare for our local community, Cabrini has put in motion the first major stages to help move us toward this Next Era.
The next two years of Next Era
Falling out of the master plan, there are three key objectives that we’re focused on delivering in the current stage of the redevelopment. The delivery of projects across 2025 and 2026 will work to:
Future-proof healthcare access
- Grow Cabrini’s capacity to serve over 150,000 patients annually
- Expand cancer, cardiac and orthopaedic services to meet increased demand
- Support enhanced patient experience at scale, while increasing access to greater care and ongoing clinical research

Enhance experiences
- Redesign architecture built to meet the needs of 1950s, to serve patients of 2030s and beyond
- Increase access to premium accommodation in private rooms with ensuites
- Redesign wards and the main entrance to deliver fit-for-purpose spaces to safely cater to greater patient numbers
- Deliver a modern, technology enabled environment to attract the next generation of leading healthcare professionals

Advance Cancer Care
- As the only fully-integrated cancer service in Melbourne’s South, we must increase capacity across diagnostics, surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, clinical trials, rehabilitation and palliative care
- Expand the Cabrini Cancer Institute to support co-location of medical and research professionals, include genomic research programs and build clinical trials to 1,000 study participants annually
Stages of the project
The next stage of the project includes:
- Refurbishment of existing wards, converting 4 bed rooms to single-bed ensuite rooms with a modern aesthetic
- Building of 7 new theatres (2 already complete) and 1 new cardiac catheter lab on the existing site
- Refurbishment of the Emergency Department to offer greater patient flow and separate entries for Ambulance arrivals and people entering on foot
- The expansion of the Cabrini Cancer Institute within the Malvern Hospital site, including access to a genomics research laboratory
- The construction of an east building to house:
- A new, more accessible main entrance
- 32 bed orthopaedic unit
- 32 bed cardiac unit
- 20 bed palliative care unit with roof top-garden
