Architects appointed for next era of Malvern redevelopment
24/06/2025
Cabrini Health has appointed HSPC Health Architects and Studio Kristen Whittle, to deliver the next stage of its ‘Next Era’ redevelopment – including a new east building on Coonil Crescent and upgrades to the existing Malvern hospital.
Cabrini Health Chief Executive, Sue Williams, said the project will be a major milestone in Cabrini’s redevelopment pipeline.
“This work forms an important part of a longer-term masterplan for Cabrini to expand its services. We are building to meet the healthcare needs of our community well into the future.”
By 2036, more than 150,000 patients will look to Cabrini for healthcare every year and many will be over 70, with need for comprehensive cancer, cardiac, orthopaedic and palliative care.
To meet this demand, Cabrini is building for the better: better access, better capacity, better intervention, better research, better treatments and better environments.
Louise Alexander, Cabrini’s Executive Director – Malvern said: “We chose HSPC Architects and Kristen Whittle because they share in our vision for a modern space where we can deliver the highest quality, compassionate care.
“The team has put patient experience at the centre of design and I’m excited by what this expansion will enable for Cabrini and our patients.”
The next stage of the Malvern redevelopment includes the proposed new east building on Coonil crescent as well as renovation of spaces within the existing hospital. Improvement is planned for the emergency department and main entrance to deliver better patient flow and fit-for-purpose spaces that safely cater to a greater number of patients. The works will also enable increased access to premium patient accommodation in private rooms with ensuites.

HSPC Principal Stephen Sinclair, said he is honoured to continue the architect firm’s partnership with Cabrini Health.
“This is an incredible opportunity to shape a facility that sets new benchmarks in healthcare design — one that expands on Cabrini’s legacy of developing buildings of significant architectural merit, which respond to the evolving healthcare needs of the community, and reflect Cabrini’s deep commitment to compassion, innovation, and clinical excellence. In collaboration with Studio Kristen Whittle, we’re excited to help realise a vision for a healthcare environment that will deliver an exceptional experience for all who come into its care for generations to come.”
Kristen Whittle, Director at Studio Kristen Whittle, said: “We believe that health buildings provide designers with the most important role in architecture, that of looking after people in their moment of greatest need. In the most recent era through the Gandel Wing Redevelopment, Cabrini Health has reiterated its sincere commitments to providing exemplary design outcomes for its health facilities.”
Cabrini has engaged the community in consultation at various stages of the Next Era process and will seek further input as we round out the planning processes in the coming months.
