Back in time: One of Cabrini’s first patients
17/02/2023
Barry Sheales, 92, was one of Cabrini’s first patients. He shares his memories as Cabrini celebrates 75 years in Australia.
“I had a knee operation performed on the first floor of the old hospital, St Benedict’s,” Barry says.
“It did not have a lift and after the op, I was brought down on a stretcher by the gardener.
One of the Sisters was looking me in the eye when I woke up, asking ‘are you hungry?’
I was starving, and she cooked me the most wonderful meal.
I remember Mother Elizabeth very well, and visited her in New York – great memories!
I’ve had an operation in the new hospital too. I have a great fondness for Mother Cabrini and all the staff.”
Thank you Barry for sharing your memories. Cabrini has come a long way in 75 years, and is still renowned for its compassionate care.
