Every day, every shift, our nurses demonstrate care and compassion during every patient interaction, but this International Nurses Day, we are also celebrating the care that nurses show one another – every day, every shift – through teamwork, mentorship and support.

This year’s International Nurses Day theme is “Our Nurses. Our Future. Caring for nurses strengthens economies”. It focuses on the wellbeing of our nurses and underscores the critical role a healthy nursing workforce plays in ensuring better outcomes for their communities.

For so many of our Cabrini nurses, their teams and managers are their greatest source of strength, providing guidance, support, opportunities, mentorship, and understanding.

Palliative Care in the Home Nurse Unit Manager Glenn Asschert said his team has played a critical supportive role throughout his nursing career.

“Palliative care nursing is a great privilege,” Glenn said. “To be there providing care at the end of someone’s life is very special, but it can also be very challenging.

“The palliative care team I work with is amazing. They are there with you at every step. You can talk to family and friends when you go home but it’s those people in your team who truly understand and support you, and for that I’m very grateful.”

Registered nurse Robyn Waller, who has recently moved from 4 North to theatres at Cabrini Malvern, agrees, and said the support she receives from her team is invaluable for her wellbeing and growth.

“Everyone always steps up to help and support you here,” Robyn said. “Knowing that your manager and your team have got your back, that’s very special here at Cabrini.”

Underlying our nurses’ care for one another are the Cabrini values, 6 West Nurse Unit Manager Caren Mostajo said.

“When you become a nurse, you know that in your heart you have natural caring and compassion built in you, and we get to show that to our patients and to each other,” Caren said. “That’s what makes nursing at Cabrini really special.”

On this International Nurses Day, we celebrate all our incredible nurses for the care they give to their patients, and for the support they give to their fellow nurses.
