Father-son obstetricians celebrate Father’s Day at Cabrini

This Father’s Day, Cabrini Hospital celebrates a unique father-son duo carrying on a family legacy of bringing new life into the world. Dr Tim Sturrock, a veteran obstetrician with over 30 years of experience, now shares his practice with his son, Dr Sam Sturrock, who joined the field six months ago.

The elder Dr Sturrock has been a fixture at Cabrini for nearly three decades, delivering countless babies and helping families grow. Now, he beams with pride as his son follows in his footsteps. “It’s incredible,” Tim says. “It’s the highlight of my career.”

Sam’s decision to become an obstetrician wasn’t due to pressure but rather inspiration. “It was always very evident to me the passion and joy that dad had for his work,” Sam reflects. This organic influence led him to pursue a career that could provide similar fulfilment.

The duo recently experienced a proud moment when they assisted each other with caesarean sections on the same day. “That’s a very rewarding and pretty special thing to have happen in one afternoon,” Sam shares. Tim adds, “When I went to the car park, I told Sam I had to take a photo of our two cars in the obstetric parking spots.”

Their partnership extends beyond the delivery room. Throughout Sam’s training, they often called each other for “debriefs”, sharing interesting cases and complicated situations. This practice of open communication and mutual learning continues as they work together.

Tim has imparted valuable professional advice to his son, emphasising the importance of owning one’s mistakes and taking responsibility when complications arise. Sam, in turn, has learned from his father’s journey in balancing a demanding career with family life.

When asked about the most rewarding aspect of their field, Tim, now a grandfather, shares a unique perspective. “I’ve gained deep insight into how the arrival of a baby profoundly impacts not just the immediate family, but also their extended community and friends.”

Both doctors stress the importance of being attentive, understanding, and trusting one’s instincts when advising expectant fathers. Tim adds, “Family is going to be the cornerstone of all your happiness in life.”

This Father’s Day, the Sturrocks’ will celebrate with an extended family lunch. While they won’t be watching their beloved Collingwood in the finals this year, they’ll undoubtedly be reflecting on the special bond they share, not just as father and son but also as colleagues dedicated to bringing new life into the world.

As Cabrini Hospital continues to provide exceptional care to expectant mothers and their families, the Sturrock duo is a shining example of how passion for one’s work can be passed down through generations, creating a legacy of care and compassion.
