Dr David Chieng
Cardiologist
I am a cardiologist who specialises in the management of heart rhythm disturbances, including cardiac arrhythmia ablation (SVT, atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, ventricular tachycardia) and cardiac device implantation (pacemaker, defibrillator, cardiac resynchronization therapy).
I also manage other adult cardiovascular conditions, including cardiovascular risk assessment, coronary artery disease, and congestive cardiac failure. I hold public appointments at the Alfred, and Latrobe Regional Hospital, where I am the director of cardiac rhythm management. I also consult privately at Cabrini Malvern.
I obtained my medical degree under the prestigious SWANS scholarship through the University of Western Australia, winning multiple academic prizes during my training, including the Ellen Haberfield Prize for Pathology, and the Glaxo SmithKline Prize for Pharmacology.
I completed my postgraduate and cardiology training in Perth, during which I was awarded the Goatcher Clarke RPH Intern of the Year Award (2011) and the St John of God Subiaco Hospital Pomegranate Award (2015) for outstanding patient care. This was followed by a four-year clinical fellowship training in electrophysiology and pacing (2019-2022) at The Alfred and Royal Melbourne Hospital
I completed a PhD in 2022 with the support of the National Health and Medical Research Council, National Heart Foundation, and the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute ‘Bright Sparks’ scholarships.
I have been recognised nationally and internationally for these research achievements, having been awarded 20 young investigator awards to date.
My awards include the highly prestigious Graham Brown Prize for best student publication at the University of Melbourne, the Eric N. Prystowsky Fellows Clinical Researcher Award 2023 (New Orleans, USA) for the highest scoring conference abstract and the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute’s Paul Korner Medal for outstanding PhD achievements (2021).
I am a regular speaker at national and international conferences and continue with research commitments as a post-doctoral fellow at the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute.
