Mr Andy Hughes
Orthopaedic Surgeon
I am a Melbourne-based orthopaedic surgeon with subspecialist expertise in foot and ankle surgery, as well as orthopaedic trauma. I treat patients in both the public and private sectors who are experiencing pain, deformity, or loss of function in the foot and ankle.
My practice covers the full spectrum of foot and ankle conditions — from degenerative diseases such as arthritis, to deformities like bunions and flatfoot, to sports injuries including Achilles tendon ruptures and ankle sprains. I also manage acute fractures and complex traumatic injuries.
Originally from the UK, I graduated from Southampton University Medical School and completed my specialist orthopaedic training in the southwest of England. In 2013, I was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS Orth) and the European Board of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (FEBOT).
In 2015, I moved to Melbourne with my family to undertake advanced fellowship training in foot and ankle surgery, as well as major trauma, at The Royal Melbourne Hospital and The Alfred. I went on to receive Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS Orth) in 2018.
Alongside my private practice, I manage complex trauma cases at The Alfred, with a particular interest in high-energy lower limb fractures and periarticular injuries. My approach is patient-focused and evidence-based, aimed at restoring mobility, function, and quality of life.
