Preparing for your surgery

Understanding how to best prepare and set yourself up for an easier recovery is an important step in planning your surgery.

Preadmission
Once booked for your surgery, you must complete the health questionnaire via our patient portal. You will also be sent a link for a survey online to assist us with planning your recovery. It’s important to do these tasks early.  Your surgeon may also arrange tests for prior to your admission, which can all be done at Cabrini.
Physiotherapy
If needed, you will be contacted to arrange a visit to a Cabrini physiotherapist prior to your surgery. They will provide you with education, advise on required equipment, and show you exercises to assist in preparing for surgery. They will also discuss your rehabilitation needs and answer any questions.
Packing
When packing for your hospital stay, bring medications in their original packaging, comfortable clothes, sturdy shoes, and toiletries. You should bring forearm crutches if advised. Bring any electronics you might need but otherwise leave your valuables at home.
Preparing for discharge
Following a short stay in hospital, most patients recover best at home — and we support that with our rehabilitation in the home program. In some cases, inpatient rehabilitation at Cabrini Brighton may be recommended, which we will assist you in arranging.
Ordering equipment
We will advise on any supportive equipment, like forearm crutches, you will need prior to surgery. We recommend you order this ahead of time. Cabrini has partnered with Axis Health to make this process easier: axishealth.com.au/collections/cabrini-health.
Preparing for surgery
In the days leading up to surgery, it is important to follow the instructions provided by your surgeon and anaesthetist regarding:

  • showering with antibacterial wash
  • fasting requirements and times, and
  • taking your medications prior to surgery

In addition, we ask that you:

  • Avoid shaving near the joint
  • Be sure to remove all nail polish, jewellery and makeup.

Rehabilitation

Cabrini offers a full range of rehabilitation services, tailored to meet your needs after your surgery. The majority of patients return home after their stay in hospital and receive Rehabilitation in the Home.
