Biography

Mr Vikram Iyer is a qualified vascular and endovascular surgeon offering a range of management options for the full spectrum of vascular conditions. Originally from Toowoomba in regional Queensland, he completed his medical degree at the University of Queensland. During his early career, he was awarded a Junior Doctor Research Fellowship through the Queensland Government. Mr Iyer’s work with the Queensland Research Centre for Peripheral Vascular Disease earned him a Master of Philosophy research higher degree from the University of Queensland in 2018. Additionally, he was honoured with the inaugural Professor Philip Walker Vascular Surgery Research Scholarship through the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.

Throughout his training, Mr Iyer gained extensive vascular experience working in Brisbane, New Zealand, and Melbourne, including the emergency vascular surgical treatment of many victims of the tragic Christchurch Mosque shootings in 2019.

Mr Iyer is proficient in both traditional open surgery and minimally-invasive endovascular treatments, as well as non-operative strategies to manage vascular disease. Mr Iyer has a special interest in the medical and surgical management of aortic aneurysms and dissections and has published extensively on this topic. Additionally, a focus on limb salvage techniques for patients with chronic limb-threatening ischaemia and advanced diabetic foot pathology. Mr Iyer offers a range of dialysis access options for patients with renal failure including the full spectrum of haemodialysis access and open peritoneal dialysis catheter access.

Mr Iyer actively participates in local, national, and international conferences, staying abreast of new developments in vascular surgery through continuous research, reading peer-reviewed journal articles, and attending scientific meetings. He is passionate about teaching and currently serves as the supervisor of vascular training at Northern Health. In 2023, he was also convenor of the annual vascular surgery trainee skills course in Melbourne.
